When you think of ROI you probably think in terms of business. But what about the ROI of time? When my son Matthew was 14, I took him on an epic father son trip. We traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to adventure together at Christ in the Tetons. Throughout the week we repelled, went fly fishing, and made memories that I still cherish.
One of those memories was from the “white shirt ceremony.” Towards the end of our time together, each father locked eyes with his son and told him how proud he was of him and that he believed that he had what it takes to be successful in life. We each told our son how much we loved him and we gave him our blessing.
I watched grown men weeping all around us. One story that stands out in particular, is of a marine who shared these words with his adult son for the very first time. Can you imagine? Living most of your life without receiving the blessing of your father? Unfortunately, many of you can imagine that scenario. My heart breaks for each of you men navigating life without the blessing of your father.
In my own professional and personal life, I have been able to help men overcome the lack of belief they have in themselves because of the lack of belief their father had in them.

And in a full circle moment for me, nearly 24 years since Christ in the Tetons, my son Matthew surprised me with a trip to golf together in California last week. As much as my blessing meant to my son that week we spent together, his desire to spend time alone with me and lavish this good gift on me overwhelmed me. As we walked the course at Pebble Beach, I couldn’t help but reflect on the ROI of my intentional investment in his life over the years. The return on that investment is more than I ever could have hoped or prayed for.
